This course offers a conceptual and thematic exploration of the forces that have shaped African diasporic identities and communities. It highlights the history and intersectionality of race, gender, and class. The course will examine concepts of transnationalism, migration, and diaspora in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Latin America, and the Caribbean as they relate to Black women. It investigates the lived experiences, cultural contributions, and political activism of women of African descent across the diaspora. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students will explore historical, social, and cultural perspectives to understand how race, gender, class, and colonialism intersect to influence the lives of women of African descent.
