Special Roundtable on Anti-Black Racism in the Academy

The Department of Politics and the Acadia Black Students’ Association are hosting a Special Roundtable on Anti-Black Racism in the Academy. Held in conjunction with the Atlantic Provinces Political Science Association (APPSA) annual conference, this roundtable is free and open to the public.

The importance and urgency of a discussion about anti-Black racism was highlighted by the experience of Acadia student Shelby McPhee at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in June where he was subject to racial profiling and implicit bias on the part of another conference attendee.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, we were gratified to see an outpouring of support for Shelby from across Acadia and throughout the academic community in Canada. Now that the academic year has begun, it is critical to continue taking steps to understand and eliminate anti-Black racism on campus. The roundtable is one contribution to this endeavour.
